What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a low-pollutant, alternative fuel for most diesel engines. It can be made from fresh or waste vegetable oil and can be used pure or blended at any concentration.
How does it work?
Vegetable oil goes through a dieselisation process. This is a chemical reaction involving caustic soda and methanol. The end result is diesel oil, with glycerin as a by-product.
Is it cheaper than conventional diesel?
Current pump prices are approaching £1 per litre. Biodiesel can be made for around 60p per litre.
How will it affect my engine?
Biodiesel is generally suitable for cars built after 1990. Older vehicles may use rubber fuel lines which can degrade with the use of biodiesel. Most modern cars will run perfectly well without adjustment.
