What is biodiesel?
Essentially, biodiesel is an environmentally safe, low pollutant alternative fuel suitable for most diesel engines. Generally, biodiesel is made from fresh or waste vegetable oil and can be blended at any ration with conventional fossil diesel. Used neat, biodiesel has been shown to reduce CO emissions by approx 50% and CO2 emissions by 78%.
What are the benefits of using biodiesel?
Reduced vehicle emissions are beneficial to the environment and its overall cost is significantly less than conventional fuel.
How does it work?
Using biodiesel is more than just running your car on vegetable oil! The raw material has to go through a process called transesterification. This is a chemical reaction that involves methanol and caustic soda. The end product is diesel, with glycerin as a by-product.
